Appendix KOLL

Currently, most settlement applications require English language at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B1 level. However, applicants who apply from 26 March 2027 will need to meet the B2 level, ensuring that those who stay in the UK can communicate at a high level.

Appendix English language

“Ecctis,” which currently confirms equivalency for those with a degree from a foreign university, will be replaced with “Qualification and language assessments provider,” a contracted supplier who can compare overseas qualifications and English language proficiency.

Furthermore, from 26 March 2027, certain applicants can be exempt from the English language if they can provide confirmation that they have attended an English language class for at least 75 guided learning hours, and the teacher’s view is that the Applicant is unlikely to reach the B1 or B2 level (as required) through further study.

Appendix Student

Again, “Ecctis” will be replaced with “Qualification and language assessments provider.”

Student visa applications from main applicants of Afghanistan, Cameron, Myanmar, and Sudan will be refused from 26 March 2026. This is because a significant number of such students then make asylum claims once in the UK. Please note the refusals will not affect applications made before 26 March 2026.

The government has called this a visa “brake” and suggested in the explanatory memorandum that might not be permanent, will be regularly reviewed, and will be released as soon as it is “appropriate.”

Appendix UK Ancestry

The requirement for settlement is changing from Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B1 level to B2 level.

Again, from 26 March 2027, certain applicants can be exempt from the English language if they can provide confirmation that they have attended an English language class for at least 75 guided learning hours, and the teacher’s view is that the Applicant is unlikely to reach the B1 or B2 level (as required) through further study.

Appendix Global talent

This route is for “talented and promising” individuals who wish to work in the UK. Currently, only certain fields, such as science, digital technology, arts, and culture are allowed. However, this is being expanded to include the field of design. They must have exceptional promise or talent, be professionally engaged in producing outstanding work, show regular engagement in the last 5 years, and meet other requirements.

Furthermore, the appointments fast track option are being simplified, so that individuals in an eligible academic or research position can access the route more easily (as opposed to doing a full peer review). This covers all PhD-level roles at an approved UK higher education or research student, subject to certain criteria.

Again, the requirement for settlement is changing from Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B1 level to B2 level.

Appendix High Potential Individual

Again, “Ecctis” will be replaced with “Qualification and language assessments provider.”

Appendix Government Authorised Exchange Schemes

The scheme comprises five critical technologies.  One of them, “future telecommunications,” has been renamed “advanced connectively technologies.”

Appendix Hong Kong British nationals

The term “BN(O) Household Member” has been replaced with “Adult Child.”

Those who hold BN(O) status can now sponsor their adult children (who were under 18 as of 1 July 1997) for the route. The Home Office notes that this will expand the scheme and prevent unfair outcomes within families.

They also clarify which forms should be used by which applicants, and that those with BN(O) or Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passports within five years of their expiration date will be accepted for identity and nationality verification when using the app.
