Tier 1 Investor Route

The Tier 1 (Investor) visa was previously designed for high-net-worth individuals seeking to invest in the UK. However, this route is now closed to new applicants and no longer accepts initial applications.

Is the Tier 1 (Investor) Visa Still Available?

The Tier 1 (Investor) visa closed to new applicants in February 2022. It is also no longer possible to apply for entry clearance under this route. (Extension applications must have been submitted by 17 February 2026)

However, individuals already in the UK under this category may still be eligible to apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), subject to meeting the relevant requirements (settlement applications must be submitted by 17 February 2028)

Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain)

You may be eligible to apply for settlement in the UK if you have spent a continuous qualifying period under the Tier 1 (Investor) route.

Standard Route (5 Years)

To qualify, you must demonstrate:

  • Continuous residence in the UK (usually 5 years)
  • That your investment funds have been maintained throughout the qualifying period
  • That you have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period
  • That you meet the English language requirement (B1 level or above)
  • That you have passed the Life in the UK Test

Accelerated settlement applications can be made where an Applicant maintains an investment of £10 million over a continuous period of two years or £5 million over a continuous period of three years.

However, the UK government has announced plans to significantly reform the settlement system, which may impact a wide range of immigration routes. It has also indicated that some of these changes could apply to individuals already in the UK, although this remains subject to consultation and further policy development.

If you currently hold a Tier 1 (Investor) visa, it is important to:

  • Review your eligibility as early as possible
  • Consider applying for settlement before any new rules take effect, where possible
  • Seek professional advice based on your individual circumstances
